>> Donald Trump Jr on Thursday testifying behind closed doors for the first time to one of several congressional panels looking into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential race. At issue, a meeting Trump Jr had set up in June 2016 with a Russian lawyer, who promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton.
In a prepared statement to Senate Judiciary Committee Investigators, Junior said it was important to learn about Clinton's, quote, fitness to be President. But when the meeting first came to light, Don Jr insisted it was only about Russia's adoption policy. Under pressure, he then released damaging emails exchanged with the meetings organizers, in which he appeared eager to get dirt on Clinton as, quote, part of Russia and its government's support for his father.
Later reports revealed President Trump himself had a hand in drafting his son's misleading first statement on the matter. On Twitter Thursday afternoon Trump Jr thanked the Committee for their, quote, professionalism and courtesy, adding that during their five hour meeting he said he answered every question they had. The Judiciary Committee's probe only one of several looking into Trump's ties in Russia, including the investigation of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
A source last month telling Reuters a federal grand jury in the Mueller probe had issued subpoenas in connection with the June 2016 meeting. Russia denies any meddling in last year's race. And both Trump and his son deny any collusion, while denouncing the investigations as political witch hunts.
