>> The ruins of Syria's Raqqa stadium. A haunting reminder of three years of rule by Islamic State who declared this city their defacto capital. The stadium became a place of terror and fear after IS troops converted it into a prison. It's a maze of corridors that lead into small rooms.
Many were used as prison cells.>>
> In the last days of Islamic state rule, the Jihad fighters barricaded themselves in here in an attempt to hold off troops from the Syrian Democratic Forces. Scenes of abandonment and defeat which show a very different picture to the euphoric parades when IS took over in 2014.
Much of the city now lies in ruins. Houses, apartment blocks, and public buildings flattened by air strikes or riddled with show fire. A formal declaration of victory in Raqqa will soon be made. Once this city has been cleared of mines and any possible IS sleeper cells. The fall of Raqqa now a symbol of the reversal of fortunes for this Jihadist movement.
