>> Russia's weightlifters have been banned from going to the Rio Olympics. The move was announced Wednesday by the sports governing body, the International Weightlifting Federation. It comes after retrospective doping tests were carried out. They turned up 17 positive results dating from 2008 and 2012. Also banned are competitors from Belarus and Kazakhstan both major powers in the sport.
The ban drawing a predictably angry response from Moscow. Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko calling it a psychotic episode. He suggested it might have been dictated by someone, without saying who. Now the ban has to be confirmed by the International Olympic Committee, though that's probably just a formality. Russia's doping crisis shows no signs of going away.
