nasa says the most cost effective way to end its very successful messenger mission is to have the space ship run out of fuel thursday and crash into the surface of mercury , the messenger probe was launched from cape canaveral little less than ten years ago and reach mercury's orbit in two thousand eleven , was supposed to be a one year mission to photograph the innermost planet in our solar system turned into a four year affair during which messenger circled around mercury more than four thousand times delivering a treasure trove of images and data scientists now say mercury's polar craters may contain large quantities of frozen water and that dark patches spotted by messenger on the ice surface could be organic compounds , nasa probe crash thursday afternoon after falling towards mercury surface at a speed of nine thousand miles per hour approximately twelve times faster than the speed of sound right in an unfortunate twist for lovers of deep space explosions , it did so on the dark side of the planet away from the sight of earth's telescopes
