aqi forces saw rapid advances in Mosul's outskirts. And they say they've killed up to 1,000 militants. But holdouts like that sniper and booby traps mean it can take up to a week to clear an area even after it's been cordoned off from the rest of Islamic State's territory.
IS has also employed unconventional tactics, like the use of these drones laden with explosives. Fear of civilian casualties slows progress even further. Even if all of us are killed, this soldier says, we will still liberate the city. A brutal push with up to a million lives in the balance.
