>> Taiwan sparks another diplomatic spat between the world's two superpowers. The United States on Wednesday saying it will allow leader Tsai Ing-wen, to transit on her way to Guatemala in January, despite a specific request from China not to allow her to land on US soil. Reuters' John Ruic explains why Beijing is taking the situation so seriously.

>> Chinese have always voiced their opposition against Taiwanese presidents, Taiwanese leaders, transiting through the United States. In fact, Tsai transited through the United States already as President earlier this year, in the summer. Before that trip, the foreign ministry said that it urged the United States not to give any space to anyone who quote unquote, splits China.

And that's really the core issue.>> Beijing suspects President Tsai wants to push for Taiwan's formal independence, a charge that she denies. Donald Trump made major waves last week when he took her congratulatory phone call. Although his team says he doesn't plan to actually meet her if she passes through New York.

Tsai is reportedly planning a trip to Central America, to visit some of Taiwan's few remaining allies. Most countries have dropped ties with the island state, in favor of China. Now its circle of friends is in danger of shrinking even further.>> Since the Trump Tsai call, some Chinese media and Chinese analysts have suggested that picking off one or two of Taiwan's remaining allies is a good idea.

It would send a great message, a very strong message, to Taiwan, as well as to Trump, about the perils of rocking the boat with regard to Taiwan, US, China relations.>> Taiwan is a self-ruled democracy, although China sees it as a renegade province that one day will be returned to the motherland, by force if necessary.
