SOUND] I
lamic State fighters striking back over the weekend in the face of a seven week assault on their Mosul stronghold. This footage, uploaded online, purports to show the militants clashing with Iraqi forces. An army source says the jihadists have taken back some ground, after a series of counter attacks, hitting elite Iraqi troops to the east, as well as soldiers to the south and west.

The source believes the gains will be short lived, but the fierce resistance shows the campaign will likely drag on through winter. The slow progress prompting fears among residents and aid groups, who say no food or fuel has reached the city in nearly a week. The militants hold about three quarters of Mosul, with more than a million people still trapped inside.
