Jecenda Ardern posted on Instagram that she and her partner Clarke Gayford, welcomed a healthy baby girl just before 5 PM local time on Thursday. She said, welcome to our village wee one, and that all we're doing well.
At 37 years old, Ardern is set to be just one of a handful of world leaders who have given birth while in power. Most notably Pakistan's former leader Benazir Bhutto, who had a son in 1990. New Zealand's deputy Prime Minister Winston Peter will be acting leader for six weeks while Ardern takes maternity leave.
>> I hope the people of this country, first of all wishing the Prime Minister very best, and the clerk Ardern as well, and that she gets a solid start to motherhood so to speak.>> Ardern said there'll be little disruption during her time off. She says she'll stay in regular contact with Peters and be involved in major decisions.
Ardern is the country's third female PM and announced in January she was expecting. She took power in last year's general election
