>> Apple, finally releasing its HomePod speaker. I'm Stephen Nellis with Reuters in San Francisco. Apple finally jumped on the smart speaker band wagon. The company is releasing its HomePod speaker next month, February 9th. It goes on sale for pre-order this Friday. The Apple HomePod will play music and you can talk to Siri to make that happen.

There's just one problem, it's late, really late. Amazon has had its Echo speaker on the market for several years, and Google has been out in the market with its Google Home series of speakers. Apple is gonna be facing some stiff competition from speakers that can do other things, like order you a ride from Uber or Lyft, or even order you a pizza.

Whereas, all the HomePod will be able to do is play music, send some messages, set a few reminders, maybe tell you the news in the morning. The big question is whether consumers are gonna wanna pay $349, that's the price for the Apple device, when they can get a similar product with a little less sound quality for as little as $50 from Apple's competitors.
