>> Last night? We will always stand proudly with the brave heroes of ICE.>> Vice President Mike Pence telling America's embattled immigration agents that he has their back, and taking a swipe at Democrats who want to reign them in.>> At a time when some people are actually calling for the abolition of ICE, we are with you 100%.
>> I'm Andy Sullivan in Wasington where Pence is leading a counter charge on immigration, trying to reframe criticism of the Administration's policies as an attack on law enforcement. Saying Democrats are going too far when they call for eliminating U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. That's the agency responsible for deporting illegal immigrants.
It's on the front lines of President Trump's crackdown. Pence responding to rhetoric from Democratic senators like Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand, who say the Trump administration is treating too many people as criminals. They say it's time to abolish ICE and overhaul the nation's immigration system. That slogan, Abolish ICE, popping up at mass rallies across the country.
>> No more ICE.>> All of this coming as the administration scrambles to reunite up to 3,000 children who have been separated from their parents at the Mexican border under Trump's so-called zero tolerance policy. The government confirmed it's using cheek swabs to collect DNA as it tries to reunite the families.
Officials say they may not be able to bring them back together before July 26th, the deadline set by a US court.>> Pence says that drugs, crime and illegal immigration would spike if ICE were abolished, but that misses the point. These Democrats say they want to overhaul immigration enforcement, not eliminate it entirely.
>> Thank you very much.>> But they're making it easy for Pence to mischaracterize their views by embracing this call to abolish ICE, a slogan that reduces a complex issue to black and white.
