>> A series of bomb attacks rocked a neighborhood in the Gaza strip Saturday as tensions once again flair up on the Gaza-Israel border. The Israeli military says it struck more than 40 targets within several militant compounds belonging to Hamas. In what is being described as one of the most serious escalations of violence since the 2014 Israel-Gaza war.
But according to Palestinian health officials, one of the rockets destroyed a vacant multi-story building killing two teenagers who were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. Ten Palestinians were also wounded in the attack. Gaza militants fired more than 90 mortar bombs and rockets toward Israel, according to military personnel.
Three Israeli's were wounded, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, Israel is sending a clear message to Hamas.>> After consultations with the Defense Minister, the Chief of Staff and Israel's top defense officials, we decided on powerful action against Hamas terrorism. Israeli armed forces delivered the most powerful blow against Hamas since the 2014 Gaza War.
And we will increase the intensity of our attack as necessary.>> Egypt has been called in to broker peace and restore calm, according to a Palestinian official. Reuters could not immediately confirm that claim. Tensions began to flare up Friday during weekly Palestinian protests that have gone on for months at the border.
Israeli military opened fire on a crowd of protesters, killing one after it says an officer was wounded by a grenade hurled across the border fence by a Palestinian. Hours later came the airstrikes. Both sides agreed to a cease fire late Saturday.
