this deal demonstrates that american diplomacy can bring about real and meaningful change i'm jeff mason with reuters at the white house the president announced today that this was a historic step for the united states for iran and for the region to move forward in a new direction , apparently he got word yesterday from advisers here at the white house that a deal had been reached after getting a heads up from his staff the president cited he wanted to hear it himself from secretary of state john kerry so he gave him a call and v. n. n. got the details and then late last night made calls to leaders in congress announcing that the deal had taken place it's especially momentous day for obama because it's a vindication of sorts for his foreign policy vision a vision that he articulated as a candidate back in two thousand seven and two thousand eight that the united states should reach out to its enemies , he took criticism banned from democrats and republicans including its future secretary of state hillary clinton , but in the end with a deal now in his pocket it's a way for him to say i was right and the united states can put decades of hostility behind
