honors and support rick santorum and scott walker adding a new wrinkle to the immigration debate on the twenty sixteen trail i merely sullivan in washington every republican presidential candidate says they want to crackdown on illegal immigration but walker and sanatorium taking it a step further saying they want to impose strict limits on legal immigration as well , santorum says immigration levels need to go down so that struggling american workers don't face competition for jobs we have to sort of take a step back and say well maybe we need to %HESITATION reduce that level of legal immigration so it doesn't impact recent immigrants as well as other other americans santorum's a long shot this time around after giving mitt romney a scare in twenty twelve , top contender in wisconsin governor scott walker is offering a version of the same walker saying we should let fewer immigrants and when the economy is struggling asking in an interview recently why would we want to flood the market with workers during times of high unemployment , that sort of talk hasn't been heard in presidential politics since pat buchanan's populist right wing campaigns in the nineteen nineties and it is not embraced by the rest of the g. o. p. field jeb bush is champion legal immigration like many other candidates , marco rubio and ted cruz often talk of their immigrant parents , now their take on immigration may help walker and santorum stand out from the crowd but economists i spoke to say immigration has little to no effect on worker wages , and some republican strategists i spoke to say this kind of talk risks alienating hispanics and other fast growing voter groups that they need to bring into the fold
