>> More than 250 people have died after an Algerian military plane crashed into a field on Wednesday in what is the North African country's worst ever air disaster.>> When we arrived at the spot itself we found piles of bodies. It's a disaster, an absolute disaster. I don't want to speak about the bodies.
>> Algeria's defense ministry said 257 people were killed, most of the from the military. 10 crew and others described as family members were also among the victims. And a number of survivors are being treated at an army hospital. The plane crashed into a field on the perimeter of Boufarik Airport, to the southwest of the capital Algiers.
It had been on its way to Tindouf in the southwest of the country, home to thousands of refugees from a long-running dispute over the independence of neighboring Western Sahara. That conflict is between Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario Movement. A member of Algeria's ruling FLN party said 26 Polisario members had died in the crash.
