>> World Soccer's governing body has plans for new global contests. FIFA says investors are going to expand the existing Club World Cup from seven sides to 24. But it would be played every four years instead of annually. According to media reports, investors have offered $25 billion for the revamped event.
And for the rights to another new global league for national teams. On Thursday night, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino confirmed plans were being hatched.>>
> The question is not if we have to do a more significant Club World Cup, but rather why it hasn't been done until now, it's time to do it.
>> But it's not clear how any new events would fit into the international football calendar. Not least because FIFA has already decided to increase the World Cup from its current 32 teams to 48. This is planned for the 2026 tournament. But could be brought forward to the 2022 event if Qatar can cope with the logistical challenges.
The country could share games around the Gulf, but that's not easily done. Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE have all cut ties with Qatar, stating that it is a, quote, base of terrorism. That leaves Kuwait as the only possible co-host. FIFA is certainly keen to press ahead, though.
It's recovering a corruption scandal which saw several leading officials indicted. And Infantino is looking to increase the body's income before seeking reelection next year.
