The gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson of Illinois, had posted angry messages against President Trump and other Republicans on social media.
He was killed when officers returned fire. President Trump visited Scalise at the hospital Wednesday night. The House majority whip was shot in the hip and will need undergo more surgeries. A congressional aide who was also shot has been treated and released from the hospital. Two Capitol Hill police officers, who are being hailed as heroes for taking down the suspect, are recovering from their injuries.
One officer was shot in the ankle and remains in the hospital. The other twisted an ankle and has been released. Matt Micah, a lobbyist and former Congressional aide, was shot multiple times in the chest and has undergone surgery. He remains in critical condition.
