>> Arrested on charges of providing material support to Islamic State extremists. This court sketch shows 34 year old Ikaika Kang, a US Army sergeant who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He's been under investigation by the Army and FBI for more than a year. Now stationed in Hawaii, the soldier was taken into custody on Saturday, according to an FBI statement.
A criminal complaint filed in US District Court in Honolulu said Kang had sworn allegiance to the militant group that seized swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq for a self-proclaimed caliphate. The FBI says he is also accused of attempting to provide military documents and training to IS. Federal authorities believe that the air traffic control specialist was a lone actor.
According to his army record, Kang served three overseas tours of duty, in South Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan.
