>> The Whittier fire in California putting on a menacing show as it continues to burn through the Santa Barbara County hills. The blaze, burning for a week now, has charred 13,000 acres and destroyed eight homes with no relief in sight. People forced to pack up their belongings after additional evacuations were ordered Friday night.
>> So now it's rush, rush, unpack the house because I don't know if it's gonna be here when I get back.>> The wildfire is one of dozens raging across parched western states in the US. Hot, dry conditions are threatening to stoke more blazes through the weekend. Firefighters battling the Whittier fire are building contingency lines in the event strong winds push flames toward heavily populated communities.
>> They're just getting ready in case they need to do any kind of burning operations, should the fire come out of the hills into the front country.>> So far this year, more than twice as much land mass in California has been charred by flames, compared to the same time last year.
