>> The Whittier fire in California putting on a menacing show as it continues to burn through the Santa Barbara County hills. The blaze, burning for a week now, has charred 13,000 acres and destroyed eight homes with no relief in sight. People forced to pack up their belongings after additional evacuations were ordered Friday night.

Hot, dry conditions are threatening to stoke more blazes through the weekend. Firefighters battling the Whittier fire are building contingency lines in the event strong winds push flames toward heavily populated communities.
