>> Former Trump campaign policy aide George Papadopoulos has pled guilty to lying to the FBI about his dealings with a foreign contact offering, quote, dirt on Hillary Clinton during the 2016 race. The plea, made October 5th, marks a new phase in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe. Papadopoulos, an international energy lawyer, served as a member of Trump's advisory team during the 2016 election, shown here in a photograph Trump tweeted out in March 2016.
The special counsel said Papadopoulos told FBI agents he had been in contact with an unnamed foreign, quote, Professor, who claimed to have compromising information on Clinton in the form of quote,thousands of emails. Papadopoulos claims such contacts ocurred before he joined Trump's campaign, but prosecutors said Papadopoulos in fact did not meet the contact until after he joined Trump's campaign.
The White House trying to distance itself Monday from the former campaign aide.>> It was extremely limited. It was a volunteer position, and again no activity was ever done in an official capacity on behalf of the campaign in that regard.>> The plea, revealed on Monday, the same day Trump's former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, and an aide were indicted on money laundering and fraud charges linked to their work for pro Russia officials in Ukraine.
