>> Donald Trump likes to brag about his memory.>> One of the great memories of all time.>> But the White House says he has no recollection of this meeting during the presidential campaign last year.>> Does the President recall at that March 31st 2016 meeting with his National Security Advisory Board Mr. Papadopoulos suggesting the meeting between then candidate Trump and Vladimir Putin.
Does he recall that?>> No, I don't believe he does.>> This image is taken from Donald Trump's Twitter account. This guy is George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy advisor to the Trump campaign. He pleaded guilty this week to lying to the FBI about contacts with people he believed were connected with Russian officials.
According to court documents, Papadopoulos told the March 31st 2016 gathering that he had connections that could arrange a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The White House has tried to paint Papadopoulos as a low le el aid without any influence.>> He was somebody who played a minimal role, if one at all, and was part of a voluntarily advisory board.
>> According to the transcript of an interview with The Washington Post, candidate Trump called Papadopoulos an excellent guy.>> Move out of the way, guys.>> The charges against Papadopoulos were revealed Monday when investigators unsealed indictments against former Trump Campaign Manager Paul Manafort.>> Court documents say Papadopoulos was arrested on July 27th, but then investigators wanted to keep the arrest secret.
The reason, they wanted Papadopoulos to work as what they call a proactive cooperator. Legal experts suggest that that means the former campaign advisor may have been turned against other targets of the investigation. Manafort and his associate Rick Gates pleaded not guilty to 12 counts including money laundering, tax fraud, and conspiracy.
The charges were brought by Special Council Robert Muller, tasked with investigating whether Trump or members of his campaign colluded with Russian agents during the 2016 race for the White House. While the case against Manafort and Gates doesn't mention Trump or Russia, Papadopoulos does. Trump has called the investigation a witch hunt, Russia denies intervening in the US election.
Manafort and Gates will appear in federal court Thursday for a first hearing in their case.
