>> Donald Trump is getting ready to roll out the red carpet for one of Asia's most controversial leaders. The White House confirming the Najib Razak would visit in September. The Malaysian Prime Minister Minister is nesting in a massive corruption scandal at home. A fund he set up called 1MDB is facing money laundering investigations in at least six countries including the United States.
The Department of Justice has tried to seize a total of about $1.7 billion in assets it says were ill-gotten 1MDB funds. Malaysia has been a key US ally in standing up to China's growing strength in the region, including its sweeping claims in the South China Sea. But the one 1MDB scandal, and Malaysia's improving ties with China, have soured the relationship.
There are suggestions that Najib may see the visit as a chance to emphasize his friendship with Trump. And play down the possibility of more investigations.
