>> Telescopes sprouting among the cornfields as eclipse chasers converge on America's heartland. I'm Andy Sullivan in Carbondale, Illinois, where 14,000 people will gather in this college football stadium to view the total solar eclipse. Starting at 1:21 PM Central Time, the moon will move completely in front of the sun, the stars will come out, the temperature will drop, and the streetlights will turn on.
Now this eclipse is viewable across a wide swathe of America, from Oregon down to South Carolina. But here in the middle of the country is where it will be at it's longest duration. So that has attracted people from all over the State, all over the country, in fact all over the globe to witness the eclipse here in Carbondale, Illinois.
Julia Chatarje and her family drove 14 hours from New Jersey.>> We were able to see like the number of cars from different states driving, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, you could tell. They're all coming here
Locals, excited to show off their city to the world.
>> Some we don't really see that often. People come in here and get to see Carbondale, and how we're just doing it in every bases man, even more, it's a great thing.>> Repin John, an amateur astronomer from New Deli coming to see his third total eclipse.>> It's was such a awesome experience.
>> So we we should not miss this one.>> Yeah.>>
at's right.>> All this for an event that's expected to last no longer than 2 minutes and 41.6 seconds. Still, that's a longer duration than anywhere else in the United States. Now, for many people, an eclipse is a once in a lifetime event, but not here in Carbondale.
They've got another one on the calendar seven short years from now. The city is billing itself as the Eclipse Crossroads of America. And the university has poured concrete for a special viewing platform for astronomers to set up their telescopes. That might seem like an extravagance if they were to only use it once, but those astronomers will be able to use it both for this eclipse and the one on April 8th, 2024 as well.
