the internal revenue service the latest target of a cyber attack , and i. r. s. officials saying tuesday that data thieves had stolen personal information on more than a hundred thousand u. s. taxpayers over the last four months , the attackers who authorities they already had consumers names addresses and social security numbers use the agency's online application to access previous tax returns getting even more detailed data on saudis and tax deductions , and plan to file fraudulent returns next year the i. r. s. said that fewer than fifteen thousand eight claims have been filed this year because of the breach , a tiny percentage of the hundred and fifty million total resulting in less than fifteen million dollars in refunds , the data theft is the latest in a string of attacks that have hit financial institutions like j. p. morgan and retailers like home depot in target , i. r. s. will notify affected taxpayers this week and will provide three credit protection to the victims
