>> North Korea throwing into question an unprecedented summit between its leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump. Denouncing military exercises between South Korea and the United States as a provocation, North Korea called off high level talks with Seoul scheduled for Wednesday, and threatened to cancel the June 12th summit between Trump and Kim, though on Tuesday, the US State Department said, for now, it would operate on the assumption that the summit was still on.

>> I don't wanna get ahead of this announcement that everybody's all worked up about until we have some time to take a look at things, okay?>> It was only last Thursday when President Trump welcomed home three Korean-American prisoners released from North Korea, with the US president thanking Kim Jong-un for the overture.

But now, because of the drills, talks with the South are on ice and the summit with Trump may be on the rocks as well. Reuters Matt Spetalnick.>> The United States and South Korea postponed drills that had been scheduled, initially during the Olympics in February, and carried those out in April.

North Korea was actually silent on the issue when those drills were taking place, but this drill, which is much more of an air combat variety, has particularly offended them. It involved more than 100 planes, some of them nuclear capable.>> The meeting between the North and South, scheduled for later on Wednesday, was due to focus on how to make good on promises made during the extraordinary inter-Korean summit in April, including ending the Korean war and pursuing complete denuclearization according to the South.

Any cancellation of the June 12th summit in Singapore, the first meeting between the serving US president and a North Korean leader, would deal a major blow to Trump's efforts to score the biggest diplomatic achievement of his presidency.>> The response from the administration so far has been fairly muted.

Perhaps they believe it's a bluff, perhaps they think it's a maneuver. Kim may be testing Trump's willingness to offer concessions, either before the summit or during the summit.>> In the statement the White House said it would "look at what North Korea has said independently and continue to coordinate closely with our allies.".
