>> The rapidly deteriorating prospects of a face-to-face meeting between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump have taken another hit. South Korea had offered to act as a mediator between the two leaders in an attempt to salvage the situation, but instead the North's chief negotiator is now calling South Korea incompetent.
He also derided the South for allowing what he called human scum to speak at the National Assembly in Seoul. This is most likely aimed at a North Korean defector, who spoke to the body on Monday. After months of warming between the three sides, the last few days have been especially challenging.
>> Look, this is something that we fully expected.>> The White House now acknowledges the talks might never happen. Pyongyang is deriding a decision by Washington and Seoul to continue with joint military drills leading up to the meeting, planned to take place in Singapore. They're also balking at the US demand to completely abandon its nuclear arsenal.
>> The President is very used and ready for tough negotiations. And if they wanna meet, we'll be ready. And if they don't, that's okay too.>> Meanwhile, Japan's Asahi newspaper is reporting that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo offered to take North Korea off the list of state sponsors of terrorism if Kim ships some of his nuclear arsenal overseas within half a year.
