> News of the visit comes, of course, during an apparently very rapid thaw between North and South Korea and Kim's pledge to halt his nuclear weapons program, and ahead of that expected meeting between US President Donald Trump and Kim. Trump tweeted moments after the news broke that he'd have a phone call with his, quote, friend, the Chinese President, that same morning about North Korea, as well as the harrowing trade negotiations that have brought fear of a trade war between the powers.
It's not surprising that Xi would meet with Kim again in the days before a Trump summit. China's traditionally been North Korea's strongest supporter, even though those ties have been challenged recently by China's backing of tough new sanctions at the United Nations. Now North Korean media say Kim is praising a high point in the relationship.
