>> Dressed in blue jeans, Putin proudly took to the wheel on Tuesday to lead a long convoy of orange trucks. The Russian president is opening a new bridge, a controversial one. Dubbed Putin's bridge, it connects Russia to the annexed Crimean Peninsula. But it also widens the divide with neighboring Ukraine and possibly the West.

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. While many in Russia saw it as restoring Moscow's rule over historically Russian region, the move prompted harsh sanctions and a sharp deterioration in ties with the West. Ukraine's president has called the bridge illegal, and that it's quote, the latest evidence of the Kremlin's disregard for law.

More controversial still is the timing of the grand unveiling, the eve of the anniversary of the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people by the Stalin regime.>>
