>> I think Mike Pompeo is extraordinary.>> He was President Trump's secret envoy this month to north Korea but CIA director Mike Pompeo's bid to become the next Secretary of State is hitting a rough patch. In recent days several prominent Senators have come out against Pompeo the top democrat on the Senate's Foreign Relations Panel Robert Menendez adding his name to that list on Wednesday saying Pompeo lacked the strategic vision and now Trump is jumping to Pompeo's defense.
White House Correspondent, James Oliphant is on the story.>> Well with Mike Pompeo's confirmation a question mark on Capitol Hill, President Trump is basically pointing to Pompeo's high-level talks with North Korea and Kim Jong-un and basically saying, well now you can see his qualification for the job based this mission I gave him.
>> Had a great meeting with Kim Jong-un, I think he'll go down as truly a great Secretary of State.>> But that's only if he gets confirmed, Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland says he'll also vote no setting Pompeo's past statements against Muslims and gays. But even more worrisome for the White House, Republic Senator Rand Paul whose firm rejection of Pompeo prompted this from Trump himself.
>> He's never let me down and I don't think he'll let us down again.>> A no from Paul who says Pompeo is too hawkish could make him the first nominee for the job in at least 90 years to be voted down in committee. Senate leader Mitch McConnell could still give Pompeo a floor vote but with an uncertain outcome.
Pompeo's troubles only grew at his confirmation hearing last week when senators called him out for shifting stands on Iran and North Korea.>> Are you in favor of regiem change in North Korea?>> We have a responsibility to achieve a condition where Kim Jong-un is unable to threaten United States of America with a nuclear weapons.
>> I understand that, so are you saying now you don't favor regime change?>> It's unclear whether Pompeo's visit to Pyongyang will help his case, but the White House says Trump already considers Pompeo the nation's chief diplomat.>> He's essentially given, Pompeo the trappings of the job, signing him to this delicate mission before, the senate has had the chance to sign off.
>> The first big test for Pompeo could come as early as next week when the Senate Foreign Relations Committee votes on the nomination.
