The Pennsylvania lawmaker also announced he would repay the US Treasury the $39,000 payment. The money was first reported by the New York Times amid a wave of harassment and abuse claims against high profile men in various industries.

The married father of three has said he considered the former aide his soulmate and denied his behavior escalated to harassment. Though there's an official taxpayer funded House fund for harassment and discrimination settlements, Meehan used official congressional office funds to pay the aide what he called a severance payment.
