>> Alfie Evans, the 23 month old British boy whose great illness drew international attention, has died. The toddler's father, Tom Evans, broke the news on Facebook writing, my gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 02:30, absolutely heartbroken. Alfie had a rare degenerative disease and had been in a semi-vegetative state for more than a year.
After a series of court cases, doctors at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool removed his life support nearly a week ago, against his parents' wishes. They wanted to take him to Rome, where the Vatican's Bambino Gesu Hospital and offered to care for him. But on Wednesday, a British court rejected their appeal.
Pope Francis had taken a personal interest in the case, tweeting after the boy's death that he was deeply moved and praying for Alfie's parents.>> Alfie Evans.
