>> Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon resigned on Friday. Lamenting what he described as the rise of extremist and dangerous elements in the country. After the Prime Minister offered his portfolio to a far-rightist political rival. This is Dan Williams for Reuters in Jerusalem. Ya'alon's resignation which should take effect within a couple of days is significant.
Because it frees up the path to this very crucial cabinet portfolio for Avigdor Lieberman. This is a man who heads one of the more far right parties in Israel, someone who by bringing six new parliament seats into Netanyahu's Coalition. Will effectively stabilize Netanyahu's control of parliament in a future legislation.
Lieberman has yet to confirm he's taking the post when entering the coalition. But political sources say besides are really putting the final details on the contract on the agreement between them. In the Israeli military, many of the top brass will be wondering what the future holds under the political aegis of Lieberman as Defense Minister.
Given his very public and very hooker stance in the past. He's spoken very aggressively about the need for a death penalty for Palestinians accused or convicted of lethal attacks against Israelis. However, some observers say that he's a very shrewd politician, they think he may thread a cautious path.
Given Lieberman's positions on the Palestinians, given the fact he himself is a West Bank settler. His moves as Defense Minister will be watched very closely by the Palestinians. And by many western powers who were hoping to break the deadlock in peacemaking between Israel and the Palestinians.
