>> A renewed call for strikes against the United States and western Europe coming from Islamic State Saturday.>>
> The new message and audio clip purporting to be the voice of an ISIS spokesman urges followers to attack targets during the holy month of Ramadan, which begins early June.
The authenticity of the audio clip could not be independently verified by Reuters. Ramadan is a spiritual period for Muslims around the world. Many mark the month by fasting during the day and praying more often. Last year, a similar call from ISIS was met with an uptick in violence.
In Tunisia, a gunman opened fire at a seaside resort, killing 38 mostly British tourists. In France, a man was beheaded during a plot to blow up an American-owned chemical plant. A suicide bomber killed at least 25 worshippers in Kuwait. And in the US, another attacker killed four Marines in Tennessee after shooting up two military centers.
This year, the month of Ramadan runs from the fifth of June through the fifth of July.
