>> The company behind an oil spill off the coast of California last year facing criminal charges. Plains All American Pipeline Company and an employee Tuesday, indicted in connection with an underground pipeline rupture that sent almost 2,000 barrels of crude oil gushing onto the beach and waters near Santa Barbara.
Reuters Correspondent, Rory Carroll.>> Attorney General Kamala Harris, who is running for the United States Senate right now, from the get go of this oil spill, came out strong with strong language about the company being held accountable. She w noted the fact that they had moved very quickly on this.
And that within a year now, these indictment charges had been filed. And the company denies any criminal wrongdoing, saying the spill was an accident and that it's already spent over $100 million in clean up efforts.>> The 46 count indictment ranges from failing to provide timely notice of the spill to the state's Office of Emergency Services to harming wildlife.
Some tar balls believed to be from the spill turned up on coastline more than 100 miles away.>> This oil spill happened off the Santa Barbara coast. That is the site of the 1969 oil spill, a much larger spill that lead to the birth of the modern environmental movement.
It changed offshore drilling laws in California. And even was what started Earth Day.>> Environmental activist and local officials, say this is the worst spill to hit the area since the 1969 catastrophe.
