>> All eyes will be on President Donald Trump's big speech tonight that'll have plenty of competition as a host of others jockey for the spotlight. I'm Andy Sullivan in Washington where President Trump's State of the Union speech will be far and away the main event on Tuesday night.
But plenty of others will use his annual speech to Congress as a way to advance messages of their own. With tensions high, some Democrats plan to skip the event entirely where others will invite ordinary Americans as a counterpoint. To those who will be sitting in the presidential box alongside First Lady Melania Trump.
Her presence is news as well, there was some uncertainty but the White House says that she will be there. Ever since Ronald Reagan, presidents have invited regular Americans to attend the speech as a way to highlight particular issues. Trump will be no exception, he'll bring a firefighter who rescued people from this year's wildfires in California.
And a severely injured veteran who re-enlisted in the Marines. Trump will also highlight his get tough immigration agenda by inviting two couples whose daughters were killed by gang members with links to Central America. But there will also be plenty to watch for in the seats reserved for lawmakers.
Michigan Congresswoman Debbie Dingle will bring the wife of a man brought to the country illegally as a 10 year-old. Who was deported to Mexico after living in the United States for 30 years. Democratic Representative Joe Kennedy has said he will bring a transgender soldier as his guest. A message to Trump, who has sought to bar transgender soldiers from entering the military.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is bringing Carmen Yulin Cruz, the mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico who has tangled with Trump over the response to Hurricane Maria. The Congressional Black Caucus also will protest.>> I will tell you today that the state of our precious union is fractured.>> With some of its members planning to boycott or walk out of the speech over comments and policies from Trump that the members view as insensitive or racist.
Trump will also look out on many Democratic women lawmakers in the audience. Who will be wearing black in support of the Me Too movement against sexual harassment. The focus also will be on the first lady, who will make her first appearance with the president since the Wall Street Journal reported.
That Trump's lawyer arranged a payment to pornstar, Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about an alleged affair, the White House denies that an affair took place. Mrs Trump cancelled the planned trip to Davos, Switzerland with her husband after the news broke. Stormy Daniels meanwhile will appear on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel live after the speech.
