]>> I think it's fair to say that we all could have done better over the last few hours.>> White House Chief of Staff John Kelly is coming under intense scrutiny a day after top White House aide Rob Porter resigned amid allegations of domestic abuse brought by Porter's ex-wives.
>> He became fully aware about these allegations yesterday. I'm not gonna get in the specifics.>> Kelly and other officials initially defended Porter as a man of, quote, integrity and honor after the allegations went public. But late Wednesday, Kelley issued a very different statement after a photo was published showing Porter's ex-wife with a black eye.
I was shocked by the new allegations released today against Rob Porter, Kelly said.>> The second statement that he sent out reflected his thoughts, which is that his allegations are deeply troubling. They are shocking.>> Karen Bohan is on the story.>> The ex-wives of Rob Porter have said that they spoke to the FBI about their allegations that Rob Porter was physically and verbally abusive to them.
And this was a complication in the effort to get a security clearance. This is something that Chief of Staff Kelly would have known about. The White House was clearly aware of that for several months, and it doesn't appear that anything was done about it.>> Porter worked closely with President Trump as White House Staff Secretary, overseeing much of the paperwork that crosses Trump's desk.
>> And Rob Porter was still in his very senior role handling sensitive documents. Porter was given a temporary clearance because he couldn't get a permanent security clearance, and one of the concerns that the FBI would have had about all of this is that an official with a security clearance might be vulnerable to bribery or extortion.
>> Porter issued a statement saying, quote, these outrageous allegations are simple false. The White House initaly said Porter would stay on to ensure smooth transition. But on Thursday, he said he had now cleaned out his desk.
