>> He resembled his Cuban revolutionary father so much that they called him Fidelito. Fidel Castro's eldest son committed suicide on Thursday, aged 68, after months of treatment for depression. The nuclear scientist, full name Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, had the highest public profile of all Castro's children. He was a multilingual nuclear physicist who studied in the Soviet Union and headed Cuba's national nuclear program, developing a plant.
In 1992, he lost his job when the Soviet Union collapsed and with it, the funding. He remained a scientific advisor. Fidel Jr was born of Castro's marriage to Mirta Diaz-Balart, the daughter of a prominent pre-revolution politician. After Castro toppled a US-backed dictator and built a communist state on the United States' doorstep, Mirta took five-year-old Fidelito to the United States, announcing she wanted a divorce from Castro who was then in jail for an attack on a Santiago military barracks.
Castro brought Fidelito back to Cuba after the 1959 revolution. His maternal relatives became some of Castro's most bitter enemies in the Cuban-American exile community. Fidel Senior died just over a year ago. His brother, Raul, has since ruled Cuba.
