>> With the Facebook scandal over unauthorized gathering and misuse of data just over a week old, a Reuters Ipsos poll shows the reputational damage to the world's biggest social network is running deep. According to the poll released Sunday, fewer than half of all Americans trust Facebook to follow US privacy laws.
That's worse than Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and even Yahoo!, which was hacked twice. Reuters social media correspondent, David Ingram.>> This poll was conducted Wednesday through Friday, just at the peak of the scandal involving Facebook and its handling of personal data. This poll is a big warning sign to the company that users are beginning to understand that there may be not something quite right with Facebook and either its business model or its handling of data in the case of this consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica.
>> Facebook, under fire by users, advertisers, lawmakers, and investors for mistakes that let personal data for 50 million users escape into the hands of Cambridge Analytica, which then passed that information on to the 2016 Trump campaign. That sparked a growing delete Facebook hashtag and the worst week of Facebook stock since it went public in 2012.
The poll also had something to say about targeted ads, Facebook's main source of revenue.>> They use the data that they have about users, Facebook does, to allow advertisers to show their advertisements to people who might wanna see the ads. A significant number of people said that they really didn't like targeted advertising.
Some 40% said that traditional advertising that was not targeted was preferable to targeted advertising, versus only 20 or so percent who felt the other way.>> And there was another message for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. His first apology was widely panned. He'll get another chance and hopefully do it better when he testifies on Capitol Hill.
