>> China says the United States has seriously harmed China's sovereignty and security, after a US Navy destroyer came within 12 nautical miles of an artificial island built by Beijing in the much disputed South China Sea. US officials said the US Mustang traveled close to Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands Friday, and carried out maneuvering operations dubbed freedom of navigation.
According to the US Military, such operations are carried out throughout the world and are separate from political considerations. But China says such provocative behavior will only cause their military to strengthen its defense capabilities. The territorial disputes continue to rage over the South China Sea through which about $5 trillion in ship-born trade passes each year.
China has made a claimed to the area, hotly contested by it's neighbors. The US has criticized China's construction of islands and build up of military facilities with concern they could be used to restrict free nautical movements. The move by the US Navy comes just a day after president Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum that, after a consultation period, will target up to $60 billion in Chinese goods with tariffs.
