>> 37 year old Adnan Syed, whose murder conviction was questioned by the popular Serial podcast, will get another chance at freedom. A Maryland appeals court overturned Syed's murder conviction in the strangling of his ex-girlfriend while he was in high school and granted him a new trial. The court concluded that Syed's previous lawyer failed to defend him effectively.
>> We're thrilled with it. It's been a really long wait and that's been hard, obviously not just for us, but for Adnan, who's now been in prison for 19 years. And I firmly believe that he is innocent and that our goal is to get him out of prison.
>> The appeals court said Syed's original lawyer, Cristina Gutierrez, should have tried to investigate a potential alibi witness, Asia McClain Chapman. Brown said the Serial podcast helped them get in touch with Chapman, who ended up testifying in 2016 that she and Syed were together at the time of the murder.
At her testimony, she said no one contacted her to provide an alibi at Syed's trial.>> And so in that way, Serial was huge.>> Syed's case is being sent back to a Baltimore court for retrial. He remains behind bars serving a life sentence for the murder.
