> A painful good bye for Palestinians in Gaza after a farmer was killed and a second man wounded by an Israeli tank shell. The Israeli military say the pair were acting suspiciously near the security fence on the Israeli- Gaza border. Gazans say, they were gathering crops to later sell.
The death comes as Israeli forces go on heightened alert. Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are beginning a six week tent city protest, to demand Palestinian refugees be allowed to return to what is now Israel. They've erected dozens of tents at five locations along the border. Israeli troops fired at two other men as they approached the fence.
The Israeli military say they were trying to interfere with security infrastructure. They've deployed more than a hundred sharpshooters along the Gaza border, ahead of the new demonstrations. The Israelis are also placing additional obstacles along the fence to prevent any mass attempt to breach the border. Organizers from a number of Palestinian factions including Hamas are calling on thousands to join the tent city protest.
They're due to end on May 15th, the day Palestinians call the Nakba, or Catastrophe. It marks the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the conflict surrounding the creation of Israel, in 1948.
