And it is clear beyond doubt that the two journalists are innocent and should be released immediately. A court in has been holding preliminary hearings since January. It's deciding whether the two will be charged under the colonial era Official Secrets Act. Late last year, they had been investigating the killing of ten Rohingya men during an army crackdown.
Both have told relatives that they were arrested almost immediately after they had been handed rolled up papers by two policeman they had never met before, after they had been invited to dinner by the officers.>> Of all the->> On Wednesday, lawyers for the two reporters asked the court to throw out the case, citing insufficient evidence.
> The UN and many western nations have demanded the charges be dropped. Their arrests come amid concerns by rights activists of a crackdown on press freedom in Myanmar. More than 30 journalists have faced charges there since 2016, when Nobel laureate and politician, Ong Song Su Chee took power.
Rights groups data show, however, most have since been released on bail. The court will hear arguments on the motion to dismiss the case next week.
