>> Congress has now launched an investigation into how the White House handled domestic abuse allegations, against former top aide Rob Porter. House Oversight Chairman Tray Gowdy, told CNN the panel wanted to know When the White House was aware of accusations of abuse, brought by Porter's two former wives.
And how he obtained a temporary security clearance. House Speaker Paul Ryan, calling for a review of the White House vetting process.>> And if a person who commits domestic violence gets in the government, then there's a breakdown in the system. And that breakdown needs to be addressed.>> Reporter Andy Sullivan is on the story.
>> What you're seeing is that a weak after Porter was let go. There are still these unresolved questions about when people in the White House knew about these disturbing allegations, and if they did anything about them. That's why you're seeing Trump's allies on Capital Hill. His Republicans saying we need to get to the bottom of this, find out who knew, what and when.
>> The House probe puts new pressure on White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, who has come under withering criticism amid conflicting White House accounts, of how much it knew about the allegations which Porter has denied. Porter had been operating under a temporary clearance that gave him access to sensitive information, working closely with President Trump.
Trump has taken heat for praising Porter last week, and for not condemning domestic violence. That changed on Wednesday.>> I am totally opposed to domestic violence of any kind. Everyone knows that, and it almost wouldn't even have to be said.>> But the questions surrounding Porter continue to mount.
On Tuesday, FBI Director Christopher Wray contradicted the White House version of events. Wray telling lawmakers, the FBI completed Porter's background check for security clearances in late July. While the White House said that the checks were still ongoing. And said Kelly had only become quote, fully aware of the accusations last week.
>> I think the White House could have handled this better.>> On Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence admitted mistakes were made. But said Kelly still has the confidence of the president.
